Reflection

With the articles in the back of my mind - I would love to create spreads that have a lot of focus on the imagery to contribute to the missing visual representation that we don't have in magazines nowadays. Myself - I get very fast attracted to magazines that have more of a non-commercial feeling. This is something that I would like to research further.
Reflection

Looking at publications and photobooks could be a nice inspiration to give the spreads and look and feel a more durable and 'important' feeling. Important as in, the content is highlighted material and timeless.

Decision making

Full spread photography or blurry photography makes the zine more dynamic to look through and draws you into the story without only using text to get a reader's attention. I would like to use this element within my own spreads.
Analysis

On the occasion of Rosalia's New Album Motomami, they have designed a publication as a tribute to the album. The way the pictures play with the text and content makes it aesthetically pleasing to look at - only a bit hard to read.

I do like the idea of concept spreads.

Moonlight (Screenplay Book) by Barry Jenkins

This book has a storytelling (screen-written) way of showcasing the content. This script book reads almost just as beautifully as the film. This is very interesting - you get drawn into a story due to this lay-out and composition of text.

The black background with the white text draws your eye to the text and makes it more interesting to read. Based on research, this is also easier to read.

Analysis

The text compositions gives you the room to breath and slowly go through the text. It gives more of a storyline to the text because you have read over the page. This makes it less of an 'informational' column but more of an 'inspirational' poetic story.
Analysis

These fonts are classic but modern in the contexts it has been used. It dusts off the Serif and puts them in a more high-end category.

This is a personal opinion.
Decision making

Due to our articles being very personable, by some considered 'heavy' or in-depth, this is something that could be nice to give the reader some space to go through the texts.
Reflection

I like clean open compositions of texts so you can really take the content in. Querida and Solange on Black Planet have interesting compositions for their publications. (Noticeable: Mostly all music artists) Is there a difference?
Analysis

Researching the designer Wales Bonner - I stumbled on the A Magazine curated by Wales Bonner. This immediately got my attention by the way the gold title shines on the side of the cover.
Decision making

After researching different covers visiting Mendo and Athenaeum Boekhandel - I noticed that personally, photos attract me to a magazine. The layout doesn't have to be extensive and works the opposite to get my attention. This is why I want to focus on image composition.
Analysis

The composition of title and photo's is unexpected but attractive. The animation and photo layer composition gives the cover more dimension.
Reflection

I love the idea of a photobook magazine, with the composition of the photos deciding how the eventual layout is being set up. This is why I want to focus on photography compositions within art direction.

Tyler Mitchell: I Can Make You Feel Good

A celebration of photographer and filmmaker Tyler Mitchell’s distinctive vision of a Black utopia. A photobook emphasing the photo's as a story without it being individual photo's.
Decision making

The photo composition in this book makes it that you want to keep the spread open on your coffee table instead of being closed. There is a certain communication between the two pages that makes it attractive to stay on the page.

Full-page photos emphasize the picture being exposed on the page. Would like to use this

Boys Don't Cry Magazine by Frank Ocean

Because of the indentations of text you follow the conversation one-by-one. This makes it easy to grasp the thought process of the interviewer and interviewee.
Decision making

For my article: In Conversation with Tida Kamara - This could be an interesting way to feel the conversation and understand our thought process. I would like to play with smaller columns and indentations.

ART DIRECTION PROCESSBOOK

of Fidelio Ferrier
Feedback

The composition of the text does not draw attention to the story being told and should be emphasized with 'for example' quotes.

There is also no strong header or intro. This should be added.

Also is the text, not well-readable due to the strong colour.
Decision making

The black background could be an interesting element to draw your attention to the text. Because our articles are pretty heavy, I would like to use this style element to make it more interesting to read.
Reflection

I find it very hard to research fonts - I chose two for the classes and discussed them with Fransje to give her some inspiration for the final choice. But we've decided collectively that I should focus more on the overall content being produced.
Reflection

Here is where I will start creating the spreads and try to get all the content together. Due to us shooting analogue it takes a bit longer to gather all the used content. This is why I want to research more in-depth to set a guideline before I start editing.

LFMC and Brian Elstak

Brian Elstak (Zaandam, 1980) is a visual artist, illustrator, painter, children’s book writer and connector between all sorts of creatives and storytellers. He is also part of art collective, Lowrey Foley McClane (LFMC).

Illustrations are a playful way to set your imagination. Brian Elstak creates surrealistic illustrations that draw you in an imaginary world.
Decision making

I adore his illustration style but I am undecisive if this is an interesting element - due to our concept is talking about real stories and therefore it would be logical to use real imagery.

If not possible for an article, this could still be interesting.
Reflection

I feel like I wanted to spend more time on the drafts for this magazine. Due to me being too busy with the productions of the photoshoots and writing TWO articles - I underestimated the workload and felt like I haven't been invested enough in this part of creating.
